Bio

R. Michael Givens is a multifaceted creative force in the entertainment industry, whose career spans over four decades of extraordinary achievements as a director, cinematographer, writer, producer, and acting coach. With roots in the artistic rigour of the Brooks Institute of Photography, where he mastered the interplay of light and shadow, Givens transitioned from celebrated fashion and music photography to the immersive world of film. His mastery of visual storytelling has garnered international acclaim, making him the trusted cinematographer of choice for legendary directors like Sir Ridley Scott and Stephen Frears.

Givens's visual sensibility is often compared to the timeless works of Rembrandt and Caravaggio, blending classic artistry with modern innovation. Over the course of his career, he has brought to life more than 70 feature films and 1,000 television commercials, captivating audiences worldwide with his ability to transform the human form into a canvas of raw emotion and cinematic beauty. His work is defined by a multi-sensory approach that fuses sight, sound, and movement to create immersive experiences that linger in the hearts and minds of viewers.

Beyond the camera, Givens has pioneered a revolutionary approach to actor training by integrating hypnosis with Method Acting. Known as "The Hypnotist to the Stars," he has spent over 40 years guiding actors to uncover deeper emotional truths, resulting in performances that are both authentic and transformative. Drawing from the teachings of Lee Strasberg and an obscure Russian identification technique, Givens has developed a groundbreaking methodology that enables actors to access the subconscious, crafting performances imbued with honesty and believability. His coaching has impacted actors globally, enriching the craft of acting and redefining its boundaries.

A true visionary, Givens continues to push the limits of storytelling, not only through traditional cinema but also by embracing emerging technologies like AI-generated imagery and virtual reality. Recently, he created over 12,000 AI-crafted images for a groundbreaking documentary on Jewish immigration to America, blending artistic movements with photographic realism to provide a unique visual narrative. As an ambassador for Blackmagic cameras and DaVinci Resolve, Givens is at the forefront of technological innovation in filmmaking, always exploring new ways to enhance visual storytelling.

Givens’s work as a filmmaker is matched by his dedication to the transformative power of stories. Whether capturing the resilience of human spirit on screen or coaching actors to connect with their deepest selves, he believes in the profound impact of cinema to inspire, enlighten, and unite. His legacy, marked by unwavering creativity and an insatiable drive for excellence, ensures his place as a maverick and beacon of inspiration in the world of filmmaking.

THIS HAPPY LAND

"This Happy Land" explores the first two waves of Jewish immigration to America (1654–1881), focusing on their unique acceptance in the Southern United States. Jewish settlers found unprecedented integration, welcomed by Christian neighbours as the people of the Old Testament. This bond fostered shared patriotism, with Southern Jews fighting alongside compatriots in the Civil War. Through personal stories and historical accounts, the documentary highlights a rarely-heard tale of acceptance and community, portraying the South as a New Jerusalem. It celebrates the enduring human spirit and unity, offering a timeless message of hope and belonging.
