Bio
With an eye for beauty and a lust for meaning, Samantha Grant is an award winning documentary film Director/Producer, journalist, and educator who harnesses the power of potent storytelling to inspire change on a broad scale by moving people, emotionally and intellectually, into new ways of thinking. Sam's work has been seen and celebrated by millions of people around the globe, galvanizing audiences by presenting them with beautifully crafted, well-told stories created in collaboration with an international network of industry leaders and former students who Sam herself trained through her 15 years of teaching at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism and Stanford University’s Knight Fellowship program. Sam’s work has received many awards and honors including the National Press Club Award, the National Ethics Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, a CarnegieKnight News 21 Fellowship, a BAVC MediaMaker Fellowship, a Yale Poynter Fellowship, a National Emmy Award for Outstanding Arts & Popular Culture Program, and a Peabody nom and National Emmy nom for Outstanding Social Issue Documentary among many others. Through her company GUSHProductions, Sam has released films about everything from plagiarism scandals at the New York Times to Ebola epidemics in Sierra Leone, the black market trade in human kidneys in India, to polygamous cults in Utah. Her work has been featured on PBS, ABC, CNN, NPR, Al Jazeera International, MTV, A&E, CBC, FRONTLINE, The History Channel, POV, and PRI among others. Sam's work has been supported by ITVS, PBS, CPB, the NEH, The Ford Foundation, The Logan Family Foundation, the Sundance Doc Fund, the Skoll Foundation, The Berkeley Film Foundation, and dozens of others, including private investors and donors. Sam is an inspiring team leader and strong entrepreneurship professional with an American Studies/Lit Degree from Yale and a Master of Journalism Degree from University of California, Berkeley.
When not Directing, Shooting, or Producing films, you'll find Sam moonlighting as a keynote speaker at conferences and Universities around the world, playing music with friends, surfing, gardening, cooking big meals for everyone in the neighborhood, and wrangling her 3 kids in the streets of San Francisco.
