How do I contact someone with questions or suggestions?

Reach out to ethics@docproducers.org and someone from the Vetting Task Force will respond as soon as possible.

How do I get started?

Simply visit the library, browse by topic, and dive into any resource that speaks to your current questions or interests. You don’t need to go in any particular order—use it as a tool kit, not a textbook.

Can I contribute to the library?

Yes! This is a living, evolving resource, and we welcome suggestions. If you have an article, podcast, talk, or toolkit you’ve found helpful, please share it with us for consideration using this form.

How is the library organized?

Resources are searchable by tagged topics and keywords. There is also a free-form search for words within resource titles and descriptions –  making it easy to find content relevant to your current challenges or curiosities.

Is the library prescriptive?

No. We are not offering one-size-fits-all answers or industry mandates. Our goal is to offer resources to expand and deepen engagement with ethical questions in documentary filmmaking, and provide entry points for learning and reflection. Every ethical dilemma is unique, and we aim to empower filmmakers with the tools and context needed to make informed decisions.

Are the resources free?

The majority of resources are free to access. A select few resources are behind a paywall, but we deemed them worthy of sharing anyway. The DPA is working on providing free access to all of the items in the library. Resources that are paid are noted.

Who curates the resources?

All materials are pre-vetted by the DPA’s Ethics Resource Library Task Force, composed of filmmakers and field experts with diverse lived and professional experiences with a range of cross-cultural professional experiences.

How are resources selected and vetted?

Resources are reviewed and selected by a diverse team of documentary professionals with deep experience in the field. Our vetting process is guided by a clear set of criteria, including:

  • Source credibility (e.g., known ally organizations, esteemed publishers, respected authors)

  • Date of publication (contemporary or historical relevance)

  • Relevance to the ethical themes in our library

  • Relevance to the documentary industry, specifically crew and producer responsibilities

  • Accessibility (freely available, easy to access)

  • Practical utility (whether the resource could genuinely help inform an ethical decision)

All resources are peer-reviewed within our team, and we require a quorum of vetting members (at least four people) to be present during the evaluation process. This collaborative review ensures a range of perspectives and minimizes bias in our selections.

What topics are covered?

Topics span the full ethical spectrum of documentary production, including:

  • Accessibility

  • Authorship & storytelling power

  • Labor, compensation, and working conditions

  • Representation and diversity

  • Interviewing vulnerable participants

  • Distribution ethics

  • On-set safety and consent

The library is regularly updated to reflect ongoing industry conversations.

What kind of resources are included?

We feature a wide range of materials, including:

  • Guidelines and best practices

  • Toolkits and templates

  • Courses and online modules

  • Articles and essays

  • Podcasts and interviews

  • Keynote talks and panel recordings

  • Editorials and opinion pieces

Who is this library for?

The library is for all documentary filmmakers—regardless of experience level or stage of production. The library is for all curious creatives and exploring educators-regardless of experience level or stage of production. Whether you're developing your first film, managing a large-scale release or have ethical questions as part of your storytelling journey, this resource is here to support you.
